The Paleogene Period
The Beginning of the Paleogene period was very moist and warm, compared to the climate today. Most of the earth was either sub-tropical or tropical. Palm trees grew in places like Wyoming, or Greenland.
There were many changes in the world that happened between the Cretaceous and the Paleogene Periods.
Ocean and Lakes;
In the ocean, fish species expanded, trout and bass evolved along with many other salt and non-salt water fish. Mammals had even advanced to the water (ocean). For example whales, one of the largest mammals, began to develop. Sharks became more common, and huge lakes were formed in the western United States during the Eocene epoch. ( the Green River Formation is famous because so many fish fossils are found the that rock formation today.
Insects;
The insect population grew drastically during the Paleogene period. Bees and other insects lived on the pollen and nectar of the flowering plants. That also helped them increase their numbers.

Climate Change.
The Paleogene Period started out really hot and humid climate, but the climate gradually became drier and cooler. That meant the things in the earth would change. It would not be possible for the tropical forests to the drier and cooler climate. Many of the animals either adapted to the cool and dry change, but some of them would die instead.
Mammals;
The extinction even that had killed the dinosaurs, large reptiles and other species, and left room for new animals to develop. Mammals became dominant. With the dinosaurs gone, mammals grew in numbers, size, and diverse. They filled the land, water and sky.

Giant sloths were found in Montana and Idaho.
Birds;
There were a lot of flightless bird species found in the Paleogene period. There were also a lot of birds that actually could fly. Most the flightless birds have gone extinct, but most avian birds that lived during that time are still here today.
The Paleogene Period is made up of three Epochs; the Paleocene, Eocene and the Oligocene.
